Syllabus: Health Outcomes: Measurement, Management
& Analysis
 (NURS 6163) | DNP Program Summer 2009

NURS 6163.  Health Outcomes: Measurement, Management, and Analysis.  Explores changes in health care system and emerging health care priority  agenda with focus on outcomes.  Emphasizes importance of outcome indicators and need for new or revised measures in selected health conditions and related settings. Analyzes relationship among process, outcomes, and economic indicators. Focuses on development of research programs addressing clinical, institutional, or systems outcomes. Three lecture hours per week.  Credit: Three hours

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Create an on line survey to collect data and store the results in a database..
  2. Import the data into SPSS for statistical analysis.
  3. Analyze, describe and present the output from the statistical program, Interpret and summarize the output in a generally acceptable statistical format.  
  4. Search on line databases and other accessible organizations to obtain information pertainent to healthcare research.
  5. Prepare Proposal for student’s Capstone Project using advanced IT technologies.
  6. Prepare students professional portfolio.

 

Class Project:
Students will complete a class project demonstrating his/her ability to identify a nursing healthcare problem and design and implement an investigation to measure possible solutions to the problem. The student will use on line technologies to prepare the investigation, collect the data, analyze the outcomes and report the economic or other benefits assesed in the study. 

  1. Identify, conceptualize and operationalize a nursing healthcare problem or concept.
  2. Review research and literature, and identify and locate appropriate instruments and measures for outcome assessments of nursing healthcare problem or concept.
  3. Prepare and execute measurement instrument for on-line data collection, storage in data bases. Collect data and import dataset into SPSS for statistical analysis.
  4. Perform statistical analysis of dataset and other measures.
  5. Develop and present a report assessing economic and other outcomes resulting from this investigation..

Letter grades are assigned in the following manner

A=90-100
B=80-89
C=70-79

To continue in the nursing DNP program, students must receive a minimum grade of a B in each nursing course and must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. The student may repeat only one nursing course in which a grade of less than a B is earned.

Measurement in Nursing and Health Research, 3rd Edition, Waltz, Strickland & Lenz.
Discovering Statistics Using SPSS, 3rd Edition, by Andy Field.
Statistical Methods for Health Care Research, 5th Edition, by Barbara Hazard Munro.
Using Multivariate Statistics, 5th Edition, Tabachnick and Fidell.

Online and Classroom Participation:
Scheduled classes will be at TWU on (see schedule) Saturdays… Computer Laboratories (Bootcamps) will be held alternate Saturdays, 10:00 AM to 2:00PM if possible, in TWU Room 205. Computer Online participation will involve Blackboard assignments  and Webinars (weekly).

Project Information:

Major Projects: The student will complete two major projects, a Class Project, described above, and an On-Line Survey. Both these projects are intended to be preparatory and part of  the Capstone  Project and  research work that the student will perform in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree.

Attendance Policies:

Attendance at all of  the on-campus classes, webinars and Bootcamps is strongly encouraged. DVDs and on line videos 24/7/365 of  all Classroom lectures and videos will be provided if possible.
